RENAMING DECIMALS ON THE LINEAR ABACUS®

DAY 17

Finding equivalent representations of decimals

Key Mathematical Ideas

  • Represent decimals as a point on a number line or a bead in a sequence using the Linear Abacus®.

  • Expand decimal numbers multiplicatively using base 10 groups.

  • Rename decimals using equivalent representations on the Linear Abacus®.

  • Use arithmetic and modelling to show equivalence between different representations.

  • Build number sense and fluency by thinking about decimal numbers flexibly.

Exploration

Find at least three different but equivalent representations for the decimal number 3.72 using your Linear Abacus®. This time, use multiplicative thinking. Record each representation both as an arithmetic description and as a model on the Linear Abacus®.

Support

Provide a list of possible ways to split the number e.g., whole number + decimal, tenths + hundredths et cetera, for children to try.

Extension

Challenge children to explain how fractions are used as a representation of 3.72 and how they are connected to decimal numbers.

Micro Writing Task

Complete day 17 of your journal. For parents and teachers this prompt encourages children have a dialogue with themselves as they question and explore ideas. In this dialogue you could encourage them to wonder for example, I wonder what would happen if.... or I wonder why my method works...
