Welcome to the Linear Abacus® home schooling program. Here you will find useful resources, worksheets, and instructional videos to help you teach your child the fundamental mathematical concepts in number. All tasks are labelled to help you teach this in a specific order.

With just one resource— the Linear Abacus® you and your child can learn arithmetic with confidence. For each video you will find follow up worksheets to help your child practice their new skills and reflect on their learning.

These tasks will help children build their knowledge and engagement with mathematics.

Task 1: Naming Numbers below 100

Suitable for ages 6 - 12 years

This video teaches children how to name numbers using base 10 place value. You only need 1 Linear Abacus® for this task.

In episode 1: Naming Numbers Below 100, children will learn about place value and how to:

Model numbers below 100 on the Linear Abacus®.
Read and interpret numbers.
Understand the role of digits in a numeral
Expand numbers using arrays and arithmetic descriptions to explain how a number name is assigned to a chosen bead on the abacus string. This is demonstrated in the video by one of the characters.
Use colour to reason mathematically
Define what a number, digit and numeral is
Express numbers in three distinct ways:
- using spoken numerals: "sixty-eight"
- using written numerals: 68
- material numerals e.g., a collection of 68 beads on the abacus string.
