  • Conceptualise the meaning of 1 on the Linear Abacus®.

  • Find ways to model tenths on the Linear Abacus®.

  • Understand how to extend the base 10 place value system to include tenths.

  • Count by tenths using the Linear Abacus®.

Exploration

Demonstrate how to model tenths on the Linear Abacus®. Show two ways. Then practice counting by tenths on the Linear Abacus® from 0 to 1. You can write this sequence in your book.

Ask children to describe what is happening on the Linear Abacus® using English statements first, as they conceptualise 1.

Extension

Ask children to represent mixed numbers like 1.5 or 2.3 on the Linear Abacus®  and describe these numbers as a count of tenths. Pay attention to how they describe and name numbers larger than 1.

Micro Writing Task

Complete day 12 of your journal. For parents and teachers this prompt encourages children to discuss their thinking where they learn how to mull over an idea and they begin to engage in wondering. Here they are learning how to integrate external facts into an internal system of knowledge.
