NUMBERS GREATER THAN 1000

DAY 6

Describing the Journey to Numbers Beyond 1000

Key Mathematical Ideas

  • Model numbers beyond 1000 on Linear Abacus® strings using base 10 arrangements.

  • Understand the scale of numbers greater than 1000.

  • Write a clear explanation describing the journey along the beads to reach numbers over 1000.

Exploration

How would you locate the 1000th bead on the abacus strings? Can you estimate how many strings you would need to line up end-to-end to model this number and explain where you think you might end up?

Support

Provide pre-made number cards for benchmark numbers (100, 200, 300, et cetera.) to help children organise their model. Be sure to highlight where they see each 100 (that is, it can be found at the end of each string or marker if completing this at home)

Extension

Ask children to estimate where larger numbers (e.g., 1500, 2000) would be located if they continued their model. â€‹

Micro Writing Task

Complete day 6 of your journal. For parents and teachers this prompt encourages children to interact with the material that has been presented in the lesson. A way to extend on this, is to encourage children to make a video explanation on the base 10 concept.
