Model numbers beyond 100 on the Linear Abacus®.
Understand the scale of the base 10 groups.
Use an arithmetic description to describe models of numbers beyond 100.

Exploration

Model the numeral 148 using a base 10 arrangement on the Linear Abacus®. Remember the rule:

Whenever ten individual beads or ten groups of ten beads are counted, they form a new group.

Describe first what you see on the model- think about how to use colour to help you talk about the base 10 groups.

Extension
